Loaves in lockdown

LAURUS LIFE | Homestyle

If you’re yet to jump on the baking bandwagon Lockdown is the perfect opportunity.

——

From the perfect batch of gooey brownies to Great British Bake Off worthy banana bread, lockdown is churning out budding bakers in their droves.

The widespread shortage of flour attests to the surge in baking popularity, and your Instagram feeds will no doubt be filled with people showing off their crusty loaves and perfectly turned-out biscuits. According to BBC Food, banana bread has become the most popular and searched for recipe during the Coronavirus pandemic. Closely followed by bread, brownies, cakes, cookies and cheesecakes.

Baking therapy

Maybe the current uptake in baking is down to the surplus over-ripe bananas we have left in our fruit bowls, a way to temporarily tackle boredom, or perhaps there’s a deeper psychological reason why lockdown is rekindling our love for baking?

Psychologists suggest in uncertain times many of us will try and establish some kind of control to cope, and food is a common part of our lives we take control from. Baking is a mindful activity and engages all of our five senses. We use our hands to mix ingredients, take in the sugary aromas, listen to instructions from the YouTube videos, feast our eyes on our proud bakes and take the first crumbly bite of our pie. All of these sensory experiences play an important part in grounding us when we’re feeling anxious and it helps to bring us back to the present. It’s thought the baking sweetness wafting from our kitchens through our homes, can transport us back to more comforting times during our childhoods when we were being cared for and looked after.
