Rethinking the home after lockdown

LAURUS LIFE | Homestyle

A new way of living and working at home

——

If we had ever taken our homes for granted in the past, the lockdown we’ve been living through because of COVID-19 has changed all of that. Suddenly our homes have become everything to us, taking on the roles of our workplaces, schools, gyms, discos, nightclubs, pubs and much more.

But what impacts will all of this extra time spent in our homes have on how we view them – are they suitable for this new way of living and working at home, for example - and how we will use them as we live our lives post-lockdown?

Finding out what’s important

In more ways than one, a crisis like a global pandemic helps us to tune out the day-to-day distractions and focus in on what is most important to us. Whether that’s finding the beauty in nature again, discovering a new hobby or actually getting down to doing the exercise routine you always told yourself you’d do one day. This also applies to our homes, of course.

Before all of this started, the way we used our homes was very different because we weren’t using them as offices or home schools. Have you set aside certain rooms for lessons with your kids and realised that you just don’t have enough multi-function areas to handle these unexpected needs? There are only so many Geography lessons kids will put up with while sitting on boxes in your spare room.

We’ve been having to use them for things we maybe never expected to, especially people who have had to quickly adjust to working from home, possibly for the first time ever. Whether you have managed to assemble a makeshift home office or are still sat at the kitchen table, you may have plans to do more homeworking in the future, so will you be planning to have a designated office space for that?

Or you may have realised that something that seemed less important when you moved in is actually now essential. This can happen after an major life-changing event (e.g. kids) but if you’d never previously thought you needed some green space outside but have been enviously eyeing up your neighbours’ lawn and stunning flower beds, maybe a garden will be on your list for your next home.

Zoom meetings in the kitchen

——

There’s plenty of other areas of the home that may be coming into sharper focus as lockdown continues, like that one bathroom that seemed fine when you moved in but is now seeing queues building up more frequently than just the morning rush hour.

Not having a utility room may also be causing people issues now that they’re trying to have Zoom meetings in the kitchen with the washing machine on in the background – or just the washing hanging up in the background if you don’t have the outdoor or indoor space to dry it anywhere else.

It isn’t just the functional aspects of living that we may be looking at differently now. How we interact within our homes has definitely been redefined by lockdown, especially in multigenerational households where younger children, teenagers and their parents are all having to co-exist in much closer proximity than they are used to.

Does your home give you the space for zoned activities for different ages groups? Can the teenagers have a space to make TikTok videos, play video games and chat to their friends on Houseparty without being distracted and annoyed by the younger ones running around playing with their toys, all while you try and focus on your work?

Or you can have the best of both worlds with open plan living that allows the option to create these zones with clever use of furniture, while also maintaining the togetherness that open plan allows for.

With our exercising largely restricted to the immediate areas around our homes, we might have found out that the local parks we used to take for granted can be every bit as lovely as those we used to drive to. Will we be as eager to leave them behind and move or decide that the heart really is where the home is?

That may be decided by what your location has to offer. If you’re able to walk to the supermarket rather than needing to use public transport to get there, that difference will have been very much on your mind recently and will be for as long as coronavirus is a concern. But even after that, what we’ve learned about our homes and their locations will have uncovered new things we like and dislike about them.

Time to make a move?

Staying home and staying safe has meant that organisations like ours have temporarily closed our Sales Centres and Show Homes to keep our customers and employees safe. However, our team has still been on hand to help you in the search for a new home and when the novelty of having time to do some DIY or decorating has worn off, many of us will have decided that it’s time to look for that new dream home.

We can’t say for sure when this will all come to an end, but we can say that Laurus Homes will be here to help you. There’s also plenty of ways to help you buy your new home, including Help to Buy and/or Shared Ownership at all of our developments.

Top 3 tips for starting your search

  1. Make a checklist – While you’re busy discovering all of the things you wish you had in your home right now, be proactive and start making a list of the new priorities you’ve decided upon so that when you start looking for a new home, you have it ready. Is it a south-facing garden, an open-plan kitchen, room for a home office? Whatever you’re missing right now, add it to the checklist.

  2. Scout out the locations you’re interested in – Why not use Google Maps to scope out potential areas you’d like to move to, make use of the 3D option and Street View to get a flavour for the neighbourhood before you get the chance to visit in person.

  3. Get your paperwork in order – Here’s a chore you need to add to your lockdown to-do list. Getting all of your essential documents in order will really speed up the process once you’ve found your new dream home and there’s no better time than the present to make a start.
